Stampede advances to 2018 National Championship in April

The Texas stampe traveled to the University of Arizona Tucson last weekendto compete in the 2018 mountain sectionals.

Six athletes arrived early Friday morning to take in some Tucson sun and get their equipment ready for competition on Saturday. The stampede came out against defending national champs phoenix heat and held them point for point until the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the stampede fell by 51 to 54.

The second game that day would put the stampede against the top-seeded U of A Wildcat collegiate rugby team. Again, the stampede took an early lead but things turned around late in the 2nd quarter. Stampede ended up dropping this game 60 to 49.

“Due to the cost of airfare this week, our full squad wasn’t able to travel so we don’t have the depth on our bench that we usually do “said Symmons.

On Sunday morning the stampede faced the Denver harlequin squad and was able to edge out at one point victory despite our import 3.5 Moylan destroying his front caster halfway through the third quarter. Great job by our equipment team to take advantage of the bench time out to get that fixed as quickly as possible.

“I was very impressed at how well we were able to run with these guys considering we were missing a starter and our head coach. I think it’s a good sign going to nationals and I really think we have a shot at this” said assistant coach/player Gabriel Garcia.

Ultimately, all four teams were to qualify for nationals so the tournament, though not necessary, was a great opportunity to assess the top competition going into nationals next month.
